Recycling bottles in Finland

We have kind of special way to encourage people to recycle bottles here in Finland.

Whenever someone purchases a product that comes in a recyclable bottle the price of the product contains a small fee for the bottle itself.   The fee is returned when the bottles are returned at specified container deposit spots.   The fees are  10 cents for glass bottles,  20 cents for small to medium (under 1l ) plastic bottles,   40 cents for large (1l and higher) plastic bottles and 15 cents for aluminum cans.

This way encourages people to recycle the containers that come with different kinds of soft drinks, and it really works.   About 95 percent of bottles are recycled here in Finland.

Spring of the School Garden

Our school garden is waiting for the warm summer. We still have frost at nights, around -4 degrees. So we can´t plant any vegetables or other plants yet. Our summer holiday is long, almost two and half months (1st June to 6th August). That is the reason why we can´t make greenhouse in our school garden. We always seed some plants in spring time and let them grow in our warm and sunny school lobby which is our "inside greenhouse". In the end of May we take good care of our school garden: empty the organic waste dump, seed some summer flowers, cut the apple trees if it´s necessary.

Here are some photos from our garbage collection. Let´s take a good care of our environment!

Dump Bins

Here are some photos of our dump bins. We decided not to craft any new dump bins because the bins we use are quite new and long-lasting. At the same time we save materials and supplies.
Here in Finland we recycle paper, metal, plastic, organic waste, plastic bottles (money pawns), glass and fluting, for example. These decorated dump bins were made by the preschool, 1st, 2nd and 5th grade.
